Week 1: Foundations and Techniques

  • Day 1: Introduction to Byzantine Iconography: History, significance, and spiritual aspects of icons.
  • Day 2: Materials and Preparation: Overview of traditional materials (wood panels, gesso, gold leaf) and initial preparation techniques.
  • Day 3: Drawing and Composition: Learning the traditional “language” of iconographic images, including proportion, composition, and sketching saints and biblical figures.
  • Day 4: Egg Tempera and Pigments: Mixing pigments with egg tempera and practice the application on prepared panels.
  • Day 5: Gold Leaf Application: Techniques for applying gold leaf to enhance the icon’s luminosity and spiritual dimension.

Week 2: Advanced Techniques and Completion

  • Day 6-7: Layering and Highlights: Building up the icon with layers of color, defining features, and adding highlights to bring the figures to life.
  • Day 8-9: Details and Embellishments: Focusing on fine details, including facial features, garments, and inscriptions.
  • Day 10: Varnishing and Preservation: Applying protective varnish and discussing the care of completed icons.
  • Day 11-13: Personal Icon Project: Beginning and advancing personal icon projects with individualized guidance from the instructor.
